Be strong and of good courage, because our God is an awesome God! The day-to-day misfortunes experienced, the disappointments of life, the temptations that test our faith; in no way, fashion or form, take away nor diminish the might of our God. Even though plans, people, and we ourselves fail, He never does.
As we read His Word, how awesome He is, how strong and mighty He is, how great He is; the journey from literacy to understanding, can be a long one. On one hand, we remind ourselves that we can “do all things through Christ who strengtheneth us.” Yet, when we aim to accomplish our own desires while still attempting to make sin permissible, we conveniently tell ourselves that “nobody’s perfect.” We act: As if the Father is incapable of making us as WHITE as snow- As if His grace is not sufficient- As if His wisdom is not infinite.
How quickly we forget: that He makes the clouds fill with rain and empty themselves upon the Earth- How He causes it to rain where no man is to satisfy the desolate earth? How, “He made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.” Romans 5:21
Remember what God did for the children of Israel as they fought in battle to conquer the Promise Land? When Joshua said, “Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies…“ Joshua 10:12-13 Translated in the Hebrew language, the words “stand still” literally mean “be silent.” Did God stop the earth from moving on that day as well? Perhaps, the Universe? Did He stop time itself for Joshua and the children of Israel? The Bible tells us that the Sun stayed about a whole day.
To have seen that great wonder on Earth must have been miraculous, but to image the events that must have taken place is mind boggling. Some scientists have said that stopping the Sun would affect the entire solar system, which is brilliantly constructed to sustain life. That the Sun (with its planets, moons, asteroids, etc.) moves within the Milky Way Galaxy-which also moves in space- would mean that Joshua’s faith in God reached beyond this atmosphere, beyond the stars. His faith took him to Heavenly places that changed earthly circumstances.
A man names Joshua told the Sun to stand still, and it did. He did not; ask the Sun, plead with the Sun, nor did he worship the Sun for it to ‘be silent.’ He put his trust in the creator of the Sun and everything that has, or ever will be created. God harkened to the voice of a man. I imagine Joshua’s faith persuaded God to perform mysteries that still leave scientists baffled to this day. Who can dispute God’s immeasurable greatness!
